Cell Phone Buying Guide to Help You Get the Best Value For The Money

Whether it’s your first or umpteenth mobile phone you are planning to buy, knowing or being reminded of the following tips will surely better your chances of getting the perfect one.

1. Features from which to choose:

You may either be enthralled by the looks of the latest cell phone your friend is using or fall in love with one that you found over the Internet. But the choosing doesn’t end with how it looks. It is advisable to mentally dissect the cell phone with regard to its features. The key is to select one that comes with the options that will meet your needs. Here are some cell phone features that you may or may not consider important:

- size and weight

- design (clam shell, PDA, side ways, slide, block)

- screen colors and size

- keypad

- camera

- FM radio, mp3 player

- messaging (MMS, SMS)

- e-mail

- to-do list

- voice commands

- band support

- E911 or enhanced 911

- connectivity (bluetooth, GPRS, infrared, PC sync)

- accessories (face plates, head set, themes, screen savers, ring tones)

- battery life

- dual mode

After narrowing down your choice of phones to about 2 to 3 models, research some more. Research what others have to say regarding the phones you think you would like to use. Look for reliable sources of phone reviews.

2. Be rebate alert.

This is for those who are in a tight budget. If you already are enjoying the service of a certain carrier, see which phones are offered fre’e with a rebate. If you have signed a contract, it often entitles you to discounts and rebates for phones. Better find out which ones they are.

For a better possible deal, instead of going to the carrier, surf and see the websites of the manufacturer for more rebates.

3. Save more by shopping around.

Checking out if your choice phone is sold by third-party retailers will help you get more value for your hard-earned dollars. If you can find general electronics stores not affiliated with carriers, buying phones from them is a lot better, too. However, you have to ensure that your carrier will support the phone. An unlocked phone that is also compatible with other GSM carriers will prove to be a good buy, too.

Auction sites may also help you in this endeavor. However, you have to be really careful if you choose to search for phones on these sites.

4. Choose a service plan properly.

Comparison tables regarding US service plans abound in the Internet. Over 60 plans from the largest nationwide service providers are available for your perusal. If you do cross-country traveling a lot, common sense will tell you to sign up for a national phone plan. Better overestimate the number of minutes you will use for every sent and received call.

5. There is a reason for the fine print.

You have to read the fine print. It is possible that you become liable for an activation fee. The fine print will inform you of that. Don’t forget to check the policy of your carrier for what happens, in the event your phone is lost, stolen, or damaged.

There you have it. All you have to do is follow most, if not all, of those bits of advice and you will see for yourself how cell phone buying could be a cinch.

Your Next Virus Is Just A Phone Call Away

Mobile Phones May Be The Next Target ------------------------------------

I don’t know how often you change mobile phones. If you are
like me, I always have to get my hands on the latest and
greatest the moment it’s available. And each time, I’m
amazed by the technological advancements and services they
have to offer.

Mobile Phone Viruses
——————–

Most of the newer phones are more like a Personal Digital
Assistant (PDA) than a phone, offering contact management,
web browsers, downloadable games, cameras and much more. I
myself have downloaded a few games to my new phone. Today’s
mobile phones run operating system’s similar to those used
by your PDA or home computer, but on a smaller scale. It is
only a matter of time before hackers and developers
discover ways to wreak havoc on these devices by creating
malicious code similar to a standard virus your computer
can contract.

What could be the result? The possibilities are limitless.
With one mobile phone virus attack on your wireless phone
you could lose all your contact information, the phone
could be directed to dial random numbers (even expensive
international numbers), be used to relay SPAM, or worse,
replicate a virus by sending itself to all of your
contacts.

Cell Phone Viruses
——————

The release of cell phone viruses is rooted in some of the
most common applications we’ve come to use and appreciate.
Have you ever sent someone a text message from your mobile
phone? I use it quite often to communicate with close
friends and relatives. If you think about it, a text
message is no different than an email - including how
simple and pervasive SPAM has become on your computer. On
mobile phones, programmers and hackers are discovering a
great way to send unsolicited e-mails or messages.

For instance, if your mobile phone number is 555-1000,
chances are that your number is just one of a large block
of mobile numbers such as 555-1001, 1002, 1003, and so on.
So if a spammer picks a random start point within a block
of numbers, it would be easy to write a small program that
would send the same SPAM message to all mobile numbers
within that block. On top of this, many mobile services
make you responsible for paying for the text messages. Not
only will you become annoyed by unsolicited messages, you
could be paying for them as well.

Cell Phone Security
——————-

Have you ever received an unsolicited text message on your
mobile phone - one not from your phone service provider? I
have at least once in the recent months. I received a text
message from an anonymous source that contained information
about some sort of health product. Not only did it contain
a brief sales pitch, it also had a web link attached to it.
How they got my mobile phone number is beyond me.

But the bigger and more threatening reality the episode
posed was in exposing the potential for viruses, worms,
backdoors, and unsolicited content to reach our mobile
phones.

Mobile Phone Security
———————

So what can we do about this? As far as text messages are
concerned, some mobile phones give you the option to define
an approved list of numbers. This way you can only receive
messages from people or organizations you know.

Viruses and malicious code are an entirely different
subject. I’ve not seen this happen in the wild yet, but I
can tell you it’s only a matter of time. The manufacturers
of mobile phones and the operating systems they run will
need to take some responsibility for making sure their
product are secure.

Given the fact that nothing is 100% secure, you can bet
that mobile phone-attacking viruses will become a reality.
Who knows, the Anti-Virus software developers may have a
whole new market.

Computer Screens Good For Your Lungs Bad For Your Eyes

Many people have stated that computer screens hurt their eyes hands and there actually have been many studies done which lead one to believe this is true. Many research projects with ample empirical data to prove his promise exist. For those who use a computer all-day they know that there are eyes often hurt.

Since human eyes are so important and one of the main five senses and perhaps one of the most important sensors of our bio-system it makes sense to pay attention to the studies in research projects done by major universities. However, one thing that has not been addressed is that the computer screens attract lots of dust.

In attracting this dust to the computer screen, it in effect prevents it from going into your lungs. The positive ions in the dust cling to the screen and once on the computer screen stay there and out of your lungs. Now then, no one has ever done a study on computer screens, which discusses this fact. I have spent all-day searching around the Internet and to read through many white papers and medical journal articles and have not seen one.

I propose that someone fund such a study to see how relevant this observation really is. And if the observation is relevant, why not figure out a way to have all the pictures in your office and the glass covering the artwork collects the fine dust to make the air more clean. Could this idea be a breath of fresh air? Consider this in 2006.

Do Computers Get Tired?

A Silver Bullet?

Until recently, I would have dismissed the notion that electronic gunk can accumulate in a machine and cause it to act erratically. But a few months ago my high-speed Internet connection, which is normally rock solid, started getting flaky. I unplugged my cable modem, plugged it back in and voila… things were back to normal.

And since then I’ve repeated the procedure a few times with good results, whenever I noticed a slowdown in my Internet speed. So I started thinking… maybe electronic devices and appliances really do get tired, clogged with electrons, or whatever. It turns out that there is some good science to support this layman’s observation.

Jerrold Foutz is a Scientist with a capital S. There aren’t many people alive who know more about how electronic gadgets (especially power supplies) are supposed to work. So you might be surprised to hear that when your computer, microwave, VCR or high-tech coffee pot isn’t behaving, his best advice is “just unplug it.”

Totally Cosmic, Dude.In a fascinating article on electronics trouble shooting, Foutz talks about something called a Single Event Upset (SEU) that can cause electronic circuitry to malfunction. An SEU can be caused by a power glitch, or a cosmic ray passing through a integrated circuit, and can actually flip the logic state (from 1 to 0 or vice versa) of a circuit. A cascading effect may trigger a hardware lockup or an infinite loop in software.

For lots more technical details, and even some suggestions on how better design can help to prevent this problem, see the full article on Trouble Shooting Electronics.

Of course in the case of computers running complex operating system and application software, other factors may come into play. Sloppy coding practices can result in ‘memory leaks’ which over time will cause performance to degrade. But from the end user perspective, the problem looks no different than a hardware error caused by cosmic rays.

Fortunately, the solution is the same in both cases: shut it down, turn it back on, and things will be good again… for a while.

How to Install Computer Memory

To install memory in your computer, you are going to need a screwdriver. Check the back of your computer to see what kind you will need. If your computer is still on, you will need to turn it off before you even start. Take anything that you may have hooked up to the computer out from its connection ports. Put the computer on a good working surface so that you can begin. Before you take your screws out of your computer case, you are going to need to ground yourself by touching your computer. I would not recommend doing this only wearing socks if you are standing on carpet, because if you walk to some other place in your home, then go back to working on your computer, the moment you touch the computer you will get a shock.

Take all of your screws out of the back of your computer and put them in a safe place, so that you don’t misplace or lose these small items. Now you must remove the cover from the computer. Different models require that you remove it in different ways. To find out exactly how to remove your case, check your manual. You will see memory already installed in your computer and also free slots for more memory. Take a note of how many free slots are left, so that the next time you need more memory, you will know how many slots you have left.

Look at the memory that is already installed. Notice how it is put there as this is exactly how you are going to install your new memory. If you have your memory already, place it in a free slot the same way round as you see the existing card. Just gently press the memory into its slot and it should snap into place. Do not force it. If it won’t snap into place easily, you may have the wrong type of memory.

If you think that you have the wrong type, just look at the memory already installed and take a note of its markings, then go to your computer store and get that kind of memory.

Now that your memory is installed, take a moment to get any dust out of your computer. Next get your case cover and place it back on the computer, but do not put the screws back just yet. Hook up your monitor, boot up the computer and pay attention to the first screen. This will tell you if computer notices the new memory. Once you see that the memory is noted, put the screws back in their places.

To test your memory once you have your computer running, try using a game that normally slows down the computer. You can also try running lots of programs at once and see how many you can run before you notice a slow down. Remember memory is cheap and you can always buy more and install it the same way. It is available in different sizes so if you plan on buying more, try to get the largest possible as this will give you more memory for the available slots.

MP3 Ringtones - Inject your own grove into your daily grind.

Mobile phones have become one of the most prominent status symbols. It has gone beyond a mere tool to make and receive calls. It’s an expression of identity; a fashion statement; and with Mp3 ringtones, a way of injecting your own groove into your daily grind.

An Mp3 is a compressed audio file. For years, music lovers have exchanged these files on the Internet, playing them on their PCs or from dedicated Mp3 players. But then the mobile phone companies latched on to a brilliant idea: why not use those music files as ringtones, replacing the dull and sometimes annoying clanging sound that has been the trademark alert for incoming calls.

There is a wide variety of Mp3 ringtones, as wide as the range of music itself. From Mozart to Madonna, the Beatles to Britney Spears, or even commercial jingles, national anthems, cartoon themes, gospel music, nursery rhymes, even beat poetry. If you’ve ever hummed it, sang it, or tapped your feet to it, there’s an Mp3 version waiting to be played on your phone.

Mp3 ringtones can also be a good measure of how a movie or a sitcom has infiltrated into pop culture. There are ringtones that are actually snippets from famous scenes of Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings; while themes from The Brady Bunch bring smiles to anyone who has ever watched the show.

But there’s more. Mp3 ringtones aren’t even limited to just music. You can pick from a wide variety of sounds. A baby crying. A cow mooing. A woman moaning in ecstasy (how’s that to break the monotony of your board meeting?).In the Philippines, when wiretapped phone calls between the president and an election commissioner revealed possibility of election fraud, fragments of that phone call were even used as Mp3 ringtoneseither as a sign of protest or to make fun of the situation.

All these ringtones are easily downloadable, but for those who truly want a unique sound they can even make their own ringtones. Some record the voices of their children. Others save romantic missives from a loved one. People also record the laughter of friends, or a fragment from a child’s Christmas performance, or even a beloved pet’s barking. While other people may not appreciate the Mp3, the fact that it has a personal meaning makes those ringtones music to the owners’ ears.

So why do people use Mp3 ringtones? The same reason they pick the shirt they are wearing: it reflects the owners’ personality. When they say my phone, they mean it in more ways than one. Sociologists say that people are driven to express identities in external symbols. It is part of our communal nature: this is me, this is the group I belong to. Primitive societies wore jewelry beads and animal teeth; some developed tattoos; and later on, developed clothes and other accessories. The phone is no different. Like feathers on a tribesman cap, it signals to everyone else who we are.

Cell Phone - A Necessity Yes, Not a License To Be Rude

The cell phone is indispensable to our modern lives, but used in the wrong place at the wrong time it can be rude and offensive. Some municipalities have warnings posted in libraries, concert halls, and movie theatres; these are often known as cell free zones. Be courteous and observe these posted signs.

Remember, being considerate of those around you is a part of every day life. It doesn’t stop just because there is no posted sign about cell phone use. Let’s say you are at Starbuck’s when the phone rings. Ask yourself when your spouse or significant other calls if, for instance, the whole coffee shop needs to hear your conversation. As you think about the answer remember privacy is not a bad word. You can take this same conversation into your car where no one else can hear the conversation, or you can take it outside away from prying ears. This is the courteous thing to do. Besides, when we talk to our loved ones human emotions can come into play. Whether we realize it or not a raised voice often reflects our emotions. The more animated the conversation gets the more chance you risk of offending someone.

Pay attention to your surroundings. Taking care of your business needs on the phone is not a license to be rude. For example, what happens if you get an important call from an executive while you are in line to buy some pants at a department store? You want to take the call, right? If you can see the feet of the person next to you and they are in toe stepping range you are not in a private place. Also, be aware that if provoked those very feet could be a weapon.

Let’s say you take the call anyways. The stranger, who is also in line to buy a pair of pants, might think you have in effect stepped on their toes. All they wanted to do was purchase their pants, not witness a private conversation. By being oblivious you inadvertently put yourself at risk for a confrontation.

The grocery store is no exception. If you’re like most people you go to the grocery store only to forget an important item on your list. So you make a call and find out whether you are supposed to get some vegetable or staple. This needed piece of information you learn about in a 20 second conversation. Unfortunately, while you’re on the phone a few people glance over at you and give you a dirty look. You ignore their facial expressions as you hear about a loved one’s visit to the doctor. You just demonstrated rude behavior. It doesn’t matter if the information the other party is sharing is important. You still missed your P’s and Q’s. You offended someone by being on the phone. If you choose to ignore them you risk an altercation. There are increasing incidences of cell phone rage. You don’t know what a stranger is capable of doing. The smart thing to do is end the call and move away from the offensive party.

Next time you enter a store or a public place look around and figure out a good place to take a call. With a little thoughtful consideration towards others you can have proper cell phone etiquette and still take care of business on the phone when the need arises. Also, before going into a public place you might consider putting your phone on vibrator mode that way when a call comes in you’ll know about it without omitting electronic bells and whistles.
