Computer Screens Good For Your Lungs Bad For Your Eyes

Many people have stated that computer screens hurt their eyes hands and there actually have been many studies done which lead one to believe this is true. Many research projects with ample empirical data to prove his promise exist. For those who use a computer all-day they know that there are eyes often hurt.

Since human eyes are so important and one of the main five senses and perhaps one of the most important sensors of our bio-system it makes sense to pay attention to the studies in research projects done by major universities. However, one thing that has not been addressed is that the computer screens attract lots of dust.

In attracting this dust to the computer screen, it in effect prevents it from going into your lungs. The positive ions in the dust cling to the screen and once on the computer screen stay there and out of your lungs. Now then, no one has ever done a study on computer screens, which discusses this fact. I have spent all-day searching around the Internet and to read through many white papers and medical journal articles and have not seen one.

I propose that someone fund such a study to see how relevant this observation really is. And if the observation is relevant, why not figure out a way to have all the pictures in your office and the glass covering the artwork collects the fine dust to make the air more clean. Could this idea be a breath of fresh air? Consider this in 2006.

Do Computers Get Tired?

A Silver Bullet?

Until recently, I would have dismissed the notion that electronic gunk can accumulate in a machine and cause it to act erratically. But a few months ago my high-speed Internet connection, which is normally rock solid, started getting flaky. I unplugged my cable modem, plugged it back in and voila… things were back to normal.

And since then I’ve repeated the procedure a few times with good results, whenever I noticed a slowdown in my Internet speed. So I started thinking… maybe electronic devices and appliances really do get tired, clogged with electrons, or whatever. It turns out that there is some good science to support this layman’s observation.

Jerrold Foutz is a Scientist with a capital S. There aren’t many people alive who know more about how electronic gadgets (especially power supplies) are supposed to work. So you might be surprised to hear that when your computer, microwave, VCR or high-tech coffee pot isn’t behaving, his best advice is “just unplug it.”

Totally Cosmic, Dude.In a fascinating article on electronics trouble shooting, Foutz talks about something called a Single Event Upset (SEU) that can cause electronic circuitry to malfunction. An SEU can be caused by a power glitch, or a cosmic ray passing through a integrated circuit, and can actually flip the logic state (from 1 to 0 or vice versa) of a circuit. A cascading effect may trigger a hardware lockup or an infinite loop in software.

For lots more technical details, and even some suggestions on how better design can help to prevent this problem, see the full article on Trouble Shooting Electronics.

Of course in the case of computers running complex operating system and application software, other factors may come into play. Sloppy coding practices can result in ‘memory leaks’ which over time will cause performance to degrade. But from the end user perspective, the problem looks no different than a hardware error caused by cosmic rays.

Fortunately, the solution is the same in both cases: shut it down, turn it back on, and things will be good again… for a while.

Build Fitness With Mild Interval Training

I mentioned this as a comment to a previous post, but I thought it deserved its own post as well. If you haven’t exercised in a long time and have gotten out of shape, mild interval training is a good way to rebuild endurance and cardiovascular fitness without killing yourself.

Let’s say your exercise of choice is running. Maybe you can only manage to run a few minutes before your heart feels like it’s about to explode out of your chest and you’re forced to stop for fear of passing out. It’s going to take you a while to build up to 30 minutes if you simply run your maximum each day and then stop.

So instead of that, try running 1 minute then walking 1 minute, repeating this cycle for as long as you can. You’ll find that you can go much further without overtaxing your heart and muscles. Maybe you can even go 10-20 minutes your first time. If run 1 walk 1 is too hard, try run 1 walk 2 or run 2 walk 3. Experiment to see what intervals work best for you. If your heart is still racing after the walking interval, increase the walking interval and/or reduce the running interval.

I recommend you aim for an initial interval that allows you to do the most amount of running in a 25 minute period. If you can only manage run 1 walk 4, that’s fine. Take a week to experiment with different intervals if you need to, but find one that allows you to go 25 minutes total (even if it’s run 1 walk 24). You should be physically challenged but not to the point of feeling nauseous or faint.

Once you’re able to go 25 minutes, gradually increase the running time and reduce the walking time. Aim to reach run 1 walk 1 for 25 minutes for an initial goal. Be patient as it may take you a few weeks to get there if you’re starting with a longer walking interval.

Next, gradually increase the running period while keeping the walking period at 1 minute. Go from run 1 walk 1 to run 1:30 walk 1. Then try run 2 walk 1. Keep extending your running intervals until you can manage run 8 walk 1 for 25 minutes.

Now keep those intervals the same, and gradually build your time from 25 minutes to 45 minutes. Don’t worry about distance, and don’t be concerned if you run a little slower. Just put in the time. Aim to increase the total time by about 10% per week, which roughly averages out to adding about 30 seconds per day.

Once you can do run 8 walk 1 for 45 minutes, you can switch to running continuously. You’ll likely find you’re able to do 25 minutes continuously without any trouble. After that you can continue to increase the distance, build your speed, do harder forms of interval training, or just maintain your current routine.

The advantage of this type of interval training is that you’re still spending most of the time in your aerobic range, so your circulatory system will get the benefit of that conditioning. If you’re out of shape, the running intervals will spike your heart rate quickly, and your heart rate will take a while to come back down, so even while walking you’ll still be mostly in the aerobic range. But you’ll avoid burning out from having your heart rate get too high. Walking won’t tire your muscles as much as running, so your legs won’t give out as quickly, and you won’t be quite as sore after your runs.

You can adapt this idea to other aerobic exercises as well. For swimming you can switch to a slower stroke or a glide. For bike riding you can coast instead of pedal hard.

This technique is also useful for distance running. Some people run marathons in a pattern of run 7 walk 1 (or similar intervals), and they often find their finishing times are better vs. when they run continuously. The brief walking periods slow you down in the early miles, but they make up for it in later miles by keeping your running muscles fresh. So you end up maintaining an even pace even through those last 6 miles where many people hit the wall. I once used a run 7 walk 1 pattern for a 13-mile training run, and I finished in 2 hours, which was a good time for me. I felt I was running strong all the way without dragging at the end.

Even if you’re terribly out of shape, you can use mild interval training to rebuild your fitness to a healthy level without causing yourself tremendous pain and discomfort. And it probably won’t take that long. A typical marathon training program can take you from running 3 miles to running 26.2 miles in six months, and that requires much more time and effort than going from 0 to 3 miles.

Judo Nagewaza (Throwing Technique) In The Street

How practical are throwing techniques (nagewaza) for self-defense or street-fighting? NOT VERY!

The Japanese themselves have a saying, “One year for newaza (ground technique), TEN YEARS for nagewaza (Throwing technique)”. It takes ten times as long to become proficient at throwing than it does at ground fighting.

Trying to throw a fully resisting, fighting adversary and pulling off a “clean” throw is VERY, VERY DIFFICULT.

People will INSTINCTIVELY grab, seize, claw and otherwise do all sorts of “spoiling” maneuvers when one attempts to execute a “throw”.

In all of the fights I have seen, I can recall ONLY three instances where one guy was able to pull off a clean solid throw. And this person was practicing Judo on an almost DAILY basis.

I’ve seen throws used in other situations but quite honestly they got the person into MORE TROUBLE than it was worth.

I will cite three classic examples of what it takes to become “skilled” enough to even attempt Nagewaza in a real street fight.

1. Masahiko ‘Judo” Kimura TRAINED upwards of NINE hours a DAY!
He did thousands of repetitions of Uchikomi (fitting in) to develop just a COUPLE of reliable Nagewaza (Seoi Nage (Should throw) & O Soto Gari (Big leg reap)). Reading Kimura’s biography you will note that in his street fights and “vale tudo” matches as well, when he faced skilled boxers his reliance on Nage was still an “iffy” proposition.

Make no mistake..

KIMURA WAS AN ANIMAL!

2. Famed Judo legend Yamashita (explained at his recent seminar that it took THOUSANDS of repetitions of uchikomi AND the brutal three man drills to BEGIN to develop the skill to effectively employ throwing techniques.

3. And last but certainly not least is Yonezuka who ADVOCATES the use of ASHIBARAI (foot sweep) without GRABBING as the BEST overall and SAFEST (for you) method of slamming someone on their ass.

The other thing that pisses me off is the idea that JUJUTSU throws are somehow BETTER than JUDO throws for real combat. BULLSHIT. The only REAL difference between Judo and Jujutsu nagewaza is generally the manner of seizing the opponent. HOWEVER, a judoka can do this just as EASILY. But moreover, JUDO nage are PROVEN to be effective in REAL ADVERSARIAL COMPETITIONS. Sure you can talk about the old Jujutsu styles employing joint locks and strangleholds in conjunction with throwing BUT again, JUDO methods have been evolving in a far MORE real arena.

I have NEVER seen a Jujutsuka “pull off” any NAGEWAZA against even neophyte JUDOKAS or WRESTLERS! EVER.

And in a REAL street fight some of the NONSENSE that these people banter on about concerning the “COMBAT” application of these throws will get you F%^&&G KILLED!

The nonsense they preach on about SOUNDS “cool” but will FAIL in the REAL unscripted world.

Almost ANY attempt at REALLY slamming someone will invariably find BOTH of you on the ground. Hopefully, but CERTAINLY NOT ALWAYS, with you on top, then the fight goes ON. Against more than ONE opponent you HAVE BIG PROBLEMS!

Also consider the TACTICAL problems with KNOWINGLY turning your BACK into an ENEMY! And ANY one-legged type throw, i.e., Hane-goshi (Hip spring throw)/Harai-goshi (Loin throw)/O guruma (Big Outer Wheel) /Uchimata (Inner Thigh Throw) will INSURE that you BOTH hit the DECK.

The BEST methods I have seen and practiced for actually USING throwing techniques in self-protection came from Bruce Tegner. His concept of seizing the upper arms or shoulders with both hands and then GOING TO WORK on the opponents legs with a BARRAGE of LOW HARD KICKS and THEN executing a throw is the ONLY approach that seems to have validity and is viable. AND that approach is what REAL kuzushi is all about.

Another topic loaded with BULLSHIT. KUZUSHI is NOT a subtle maneuvering to “break balance” in THE REAL WORLD nor is it evident in almost ANY real Randori or Shiai. MORE esoteric fantasy crap. If I want to “break your balance” I’ll do it by KNOCKING THE S$%T out of you!

Lastly, DON’T believe the BULLSHIT about Judo throws “being SAFE” for the opponent. HORSES#$T! With SUFFICIENT practice you can “land” a guy on his HEAD, NECK or shoulder.

What makes Judo throws SEEM safe is the practice of UKEMI, the use of TATAMI and the LACK of intent in F!@#$%G up your training partner.

Check out Koizumi’s book on throws. He explains very well how a Dojo “safe” throw can be executed on the STREET with devastating results by a simple change in the direction of the “pull” done by the hands and wrists.

Instead of “heaving” your man over and directing him INTO a breakfall, you JUST pull STRAIGHT down and DRIVE him head first into the ground.

The DOERS KNOW the difference between real and chickenshit. The pontificators present ONLY a “shell” that has NO REAL SUBSTANCE, just “warrior fantasy appeal”.

They are blinded by their own BULLS@#T.

How to Install Computer Memory

To install memory in your computer, you are going to need a screwdriver. Check the back of your computer to see what kind you will need. If your computer is still on, you will need to turn it off before you even start. Take anything that you may have hooked up to the computer out from its connection ports. Put the computer on a good working surface so that you can begin. Before you take your screws out of your computer case, you are going to need to ground yourself by touching your computer. I would not recommend doing this only wearing socks if you are standing on carpet, because if you walk to some other place in your home, then go back to working on your computer, the moment you touch the computer you will get a shock.

Take all of your screws out of the back of your computer and put them in a safe place, so that you don’t misplace or lose these small items. Now you must remove the cover from the computer. Different models require that you remove it in different ways. To find out exactly how to remove your case, check your manual. You will see memory already installed in your computer and also free slots for more memory. Take a note of how many free slots are left, so that the next time you need more memory, you will know how many slots you have left.

Look at the memory that is already installed. Notice how it is put there as this is exactly how you are going to install your new memory. If you have your memory already, place it in a free slot the same way round as you see the existing card. Just gently press the memory into its slot and it should snap into place. Do not force it. If it won’t snap into place easily, you may have the wrong type of memory.

If you think that you have the wrong type, just look at the memory already installed and take a note of its markings, then go to your computer store and get that kind of memory.

Now that your memory is installed, take a moment to get any dust out of your computer. Next get your case cover and place it back on the computer, but do not put the screws back just yet. Hook up your monitor, boot up the computer and pay attention to the first screen. This will tell you if computer notices the new memory. Once you see that the memory is noted, put the screws back in their places.

To test your memory once you have your computer running, try using a game that normally slows down the computer. You can also try running lots of programs at once and see how many you can run before you notice a slow down. Remember memory is cheap and you can always buy more and install it the same way. It is available in different sizes so if you plan on buying more, try to get the largest possible as this will give you more memory for the available slots.

MP3 Ringtones - Inject your own grove into your daily grind.

Mobile phones have become one of the most prominent status symbols. It has gone beyond a mere tool to make and receive calls. It’s an expression of identity; a fashion statement; and with Mp3 ringtones, a way of injecting your own groove into your daily grind.

An Mp3 is a compressed audio file. For years, music lovers have exchanged these files on the Internet, playing them on their PCs or from dedicated Mp3 players. But then the mobile phone companies latched on to a brilliant idea: why not use those music files as ringtones, replacing the dull and sometimes annoying clanging sound that has been the trademark alert for incoming calls.

There is a wide variety of Mp3 ringtones, as wide as the range of music itself. From Mozart to Madonna, the Beatles to Britney Spears, or even commercial jingles, national anthems, cartoon themes, gospel music, nursery rhymes, even beat poetry. If you’ve ever hummed it, sang it, or tapped your feet to it, there’s an Mp3 version waiting to be played on your phone.

Mp3 ringtones can also be a good measure of how a movie or a sitcom has infiltrated into pop culture. There are ringtones that are actually snippets from famous scenes of Harry Potter or Lord of the Rings; while themes from The Brady Bunch bring smiles to anyone who has ever watched the show.

But there’s more. Mp3 ringtones aren’t even limited to just music. You can pick from a wide variety of sounds. A baby crying. A cow mooing. A woman moaning in ecstasy (how’s that to break the monotony of your board meeting?).In the Philippines, when wiretapped phone calls between the president and an election commissioner revealed possibility of election fraud, fragments of that phone call were even used as Mp3 ringtoneseither as a sign of protest or to make fun of the situation.

All these ringtones are easily downloadable, but for those who truly want a unique sound they can even make their own ringtones. Some record the voices of their children. Others save romantic missives from a loved one. People also record the laughter of friends, or a fragment from a child’s Christmas performance, or even a beloved pet’s barking. While other people may not appreciate the Mp3, the fact that it has a personal meaning makes those ringtones music to the owners’ ears.

So why do people use Mp3 ringtones? The same reason they pick the shirt they are wearing: it reflects the owners’ personality. When they say my phone, they mean it in more ways than one. Sociologists say that people are driven to express identities in external symbols. It is part of our communal nature: this is me, this is the group I belong to. Primitive societies wore jewelry beads and animal teeth; some developed tattoos; and later on, developed clothes and other accessories. The phone is no different. Like feathers on a tribesman cap, it signals to everyone else who we are.

Philip Nicosia is the webmaster of Ringtones.lt, a site specialising in the different genres of ringtones, including polyphonic ringtones, true tones and mp3 ringtones.

Bryan Ellis - Virtual Real Estate Investing vs. Physical Real Estate Investing

Virtual Real Estate Investing” is a relatively new concept. What is meant by “Virtual Real Estate Investing” ranges from online games like SecondLife (where real profit can be made) to the use of internet technologies to make normal real estate investors more profitable.

In order to figure out the truth of the matter, I sought out Bryan Ellis, whose experience in the fledgling industry is truly impressive.

Ellis says he adopted the term “virtual real estate investing” sometime before Y2K after he realized that making money online is conceptually very similar to making money with physical real estate.

One example of the parallels between virtual and physical real estate Bryan Ellis cites is the similarity between the monetization of domain names versus physical property. He points out that control of a domain name or even a specific web page is much like controlling a real estate property ” those assets can be monetized in similar ways: By selling them for a profit, by leasing them, by offering advertising, etc.

The similarities really are obvious. Consider this: If you own a piece of real estate in a desirable neighborhood, your real estate has value because other people are interested in that location. Similarly, ownership of a desirable domain name is valuable for the same reasons. Regardless of the type of asset, you can sell or lease or use any number of strategies to turn the assets into cash.

In our next installment of this series on virtual real estate investing., Bryan Ellis will share the internet analogies to the physical concept of real estate development.

How To Get Out Of Credit Card Debt Much Faster & Save Lots Of Money - Without Filing For Bankruptcy!

The most important lesson I learned about getting out of debt is that you’ll NEVER get out of debt playing by the rules of your creditors. No matter what they say, they really don’t want you to get out of debt.

After all, the longer it takes you to pay off your debt, the more money they’ll make.

So trust me, you’ll NEVER get out of debt by just making minimum payments. Or by paying ridiculously high interest rates…or by paying late fees, overlimit fees, or any other fees charged by your creditors.

How You Can Get Out Of Debt Faster, Too

So, how do you pay off your credit card bills…especially when money is REAL tight?

Work out an agreement with your creditors to pay off your credit card bills at a reduced amount. You’ll be able to pay off your bills more quickly, and the credit card companies will get their money faster.

This process is called debt negotiation, or debt settlement.

Most people don’t know this type of debt reduction is even an option - which is exactly what the creditors want you to think. (You’ll also learn other strategies to help you get out of debt faster.)

But believe me, debt negotiation really does work.

Find Out If Debt Negotiation Is Right For You

Debt negotiation is a more aggressive approach to getting out of debt (usually, you must be behind on your payments to get the creditors to agree to a settlement), and is not necessarily right for everyone.

So make sure to ask lots of questions. And compare different programs. Then decide if it is right for you.

My only regret is that I did not find out about this option until I had already paid my credit card companies thousands of dollars in interest!

The most important point to remember is that you’ll NEVER get out of debt playing by the creditor’s rules.

So take a few minutes to find out how you can pay off your credit card bills faster, and save yourself LOTS OF MONEY at the same time.

If you’re looking for a more traditional way to get out of debt, then debt consolidation may be the answer for you. You might not get out of debt as fast, but you still may be able to lower your interest rates and save yourself a bunch of money!
