Introduction to F1 Racing

In the early stages of the nineteen-hundreds Formula One initiated with rudimentary vehicles and elder gentleman drivers, nevertheless the main F1 Motor Racing contest did not take place until the nineteen-fifties. As the numerous years drove by & the Championship developed, it almost immediately became evident that Formula One Motor Racing was the paramount of motor sport. The racing vehicles were the fastest, the knowledge was the most sophisticated and the racing drivers were at the peak of their fitness coming from different countries all across the earth.

With the introduction of sponsorship backing, Formula One took on it’s more commercial shape & can nowadays be thought of being big business ? with development costs reaching millions & billions of pounds with no problem. With big business comes politics and occasionally it is the contacts you are acquainted to and how much wealth you hold that brings you what you fancy. Formula 1 is knotted with conspiracy stories ? I will admit to being one of them ? but depending on how wrapped up you would like to get in the Formula 1 Racing world, that side of things is quickly ignored. What in truth matters is what transpires on the tarmac. Are you a fan of Formula 1? If so then find great offers on Formula 1 Merchandise at F1Tribute.com!

Voyaging from corner to corner across the world for about eight months of the year, F1 sets-up in countries large & small, affluent and not-quite-so-rich, with stunning backdrops, charming locals & plenty of native customs to be soaked up. Spanning Friday, Saturday & Sunday, a Formula One weekend is a hard journey, from early testing, to the dying laps of the race.

The traditional organisation contains a motor race every fortnight. At times the Formula 1 calendar is changed with a little bit and there are grand prixs on back-to-back weekends, or every now and then you have to go lots of weeks before even seeing the household Formula 1 racing drivers again. Once it is time for the next Formula One motor race, you can monitor the news for your favourite Formula One team as they reach their destination. Friday consists of practice sessions, Saturday is for qualifying & Sunday is for the racing event.

How To Teach Children Loyalty and Dependability

Individualism is a common thing in today’s modern society. Many people care more about themselves than others and do what they like with little consideration for people whom may be affected by their action. It is quite a sad thing. You can see that there are is a general lack of loyalty and commitment to people own belongings. For example,

increasing number of adultery cases (a lack of loyalty to family and spouse)

vandalism and destroying of public properties (lack of loyalty to country)

increasing cases of cheating in the corporate world and white collar crimes (lack of loyalty and commitment to the organization)

There is a need for us to teach loyalty to our children - loyalty to family, to country, church, schools and other organizations and institutions to which commitments are made. We have to teach them about reliability and consistency in doing what they say they will do.

Here are some general guidelines that help you to teach loyalty to your children:

Highlight Your Own Dependability

Make yourself an example of being dependable. We do things every day that illustrate our loyalty to our children and show our dependability in the family. However many of these things are so automatic that they are seldom noticed and seldom used as visible examples of important moral values.

At home, I often tell our 4-year-old daughter Ethel “Papa need to go out to work today so that I can bring in the money for the family to buy food and things that we need”. She understands it so well that she said to me some time ago, “Papa, I’ll love that you can stay at home more often and keep me company. However I know that you need to go out and work because we need you to bring in the money. So don’t worry, just go. You can keep me company when you are back tonight.” Honestly I feel very proud and touch by her sensitivity.

Last Sunday, Ethel forgot to bring her favorite toy to her English lesson - it is for the “show and tell” activity. She called me on my phone while I was at the hospital visiting my mom. She sound very sad and started to cry on the phone. Knowing how kids feel when they forget something that the teacher tell them to bring, I quickly said to her “Don’t worry my dear. I will definitely bring your favorite toy to you before your class begins. You can count on me. Just tell me what time your lesson starts”. And indeed, I arrive just in time for her lesson. That save her tears and added another point to her trust in her daddy that she can always count on him if she needs help.

Here are two more examples that you can use to highlight to your children about your dependability. Instead of saying, “I’ll pick you up after your lesson.” say “I will be there before 4 p.m. You can count on it.” Instead of just going to the concert where your child will be performing, tell her that “Papa will definitely be at the concert because I love you and I want to be with you and support what you do!”

Tell your children often that you will be there for them especially when they are going through difficult time. And take credit and pat yourself for your dependability and loyalty for your family. It makes you feel good and it is also the best way to instill the same qualities in your children.

Thanks Your Children and Praise Them for Every Evidence of Their Own Dependability

Praising your children reinforce the value and show them how often dependability can be used. Thanks your children when they are on time for an event or when they help you or their younger siblings. For example, whenever our 4-year-old daughter helps me to bring me the potty, baby wipe or food for her baby brother, I often say to her “Thank you my dear for your help. I can always count on you to help your brother.”

So make a commitment today, to never take for granted any act or evidence of dependability or loyalty. You can help your children to develop the great value of loyalty, dependability and reliability.

UEFA Champions League Finals Bring Opportunities not Only for the Teams

AC Milan was the only UEFA Champions League semi-finalist to win on their return to home action on the Serie A during the weekend as they scored 4 goals against AC Chievo Verona. Add this to the semi-finals victory against Olympique Lyonnais and you can say you have a team worth watching.

But this pass to the finals does not only present an opportunity for the team on the UEFA Champions League but to its star Andriy Shevchenko, he is granted the chance to break a goal scoring record.

He currently has a record of 9 goals in the current UEFA Champions League Campaign, this is closer than anybody has gotten to break Ruud Van Nistelrooij’s record of 12 so basically with the three matches left; he only needs a goal a game to tie the standing record.

Another target within Shevchenko’s lead is the overall record for goals scored in the UEFA club competition. He already equaled the mark set by SL Benefica’s legend Eusebio, and he stands just 6 goals short of the mark set by Gerd Muller.

The player that got closest to Shevchenko is Barcelona’s star Ronaldinho with 7 goals on this 2005-06 UEFA Champions League tournament.

Overcome Procrastination

Problem: People procrastinate because many are paralyzed with
fear of failure, loss, pain and some, success! What we fear
becomes our reality.

Solution 1. Fear is “False Evidence Appearing Real. 2. 90% of
what we fear never becomes reality. 3. The best way to overcome
fear is to do what we fear. 4. It helps if you visualize the
worst case scenario and accept it as a possibility and realize
it will probably never come to pass. 5. Our imaginations
exaggerate negative fears completely out of proportion and in
most cases never occur!

Problem Few have a strategy to accomplish their goals.

Solution 1. Make a contract with yourself. 2. Identify specific
rewards for positive action. 3. Establish certain penalties for
procrastination. 4. Break your goals down into small steps. 5.
Schedule a time segment for each activity. 6. Give yourself
rewards for correct action and penalties when you do not follow
through.

Problem Many have a lack of discipline. It takes 30 days to
break old habits and establish new ones.

Solution 1. Create a Success-Habits-Reminder card with boxes for
checkmarks to record your daily activities. 2. Tape it to your
bathroom mirror. 3. Stick it on your desk to keep track of your
actions.

Problem Most people do not have a plan or assign priorities.

Solution 1. Create a “To Do” List. 2. Determine immediate,
intermediate and long-range goals. 3. Plan the goals that are in
immediate reach of your abilities and assign priorities:
Important & urgent, Important but not urgent, Not urgent or
important. 4. Do the urgent & important tasks first. 5. 80% of
your activities are not important to your goals. 6. Only 20% are
urgent & important. 7. Learn to eliminate the 80% activities
that do not help you attain your goals.

Problem Many try to complete the most urgent & important
activities at the last moment.

Solution Every day schedule a block of prime time to work on an
important activity that is due in the future. Soon you will find
the time to analyze and polish your projects many times before
they come due.

Problem There never seems to be enough time to contemplate your
decisions

Solution Schedule quiet time to make important decisions. Listen
to relaxing music that balances both brain hemispheres. If you
do not schedule time for exercise, rest, entertainment,
fellowship and prayer your will spin out of control.

Problem You are overwhelmed.

Solution Learn to say, “No!” to activities and individuals that
do not contribute to the attainment of your goals. Often, people
take advantage of your kindness and generosity without ever
realizing you have better things to do with your time.

Problem: Most people do not have a master plan.

Solution 1. Create a master list of all personal, spiritual,
physical, emotional and financial goals for 1 year. 2. Assign
priorities for each. 3. Predict a date for completion. 4. Write
everything in pencil so you can change it.

Problem: Few people use an organizer or daytime planner to
coordinate their activities.

Solution 1. Transfer the things on your master list to the
correct dates in your organizer. 2. Check off each item as it is
completed. 3. At the end of each day, reschedule the things that
were not completed. 4. If an item is rescheduled twice, you are
procrastinating. 5. Ask yourself, “What if I never do this?” 6.
If the answer is, “No big deal!” Delete it.

Problem Some people suffer from perfection paralysis.

Solution 1. Make the decision that you are not perfect and never
will be. Everything you do will be imperfect in some way. 2.
Realize that if it is worth doing, it’s worth doing wrong until
you get it right. 3. Stop judging yourself according to your
accomplishments. 4. Learn to trust yourself by developing
intuition and following your hunches. You will find your first
premonition is usually the correct one. 5. Discover just how
right you are by making predictions and observing how a high
percentage of them are correct. (Predict the line at the
supermarket or bank that will move the fastest and take action
accordingly.) 6. Make quick decisions in 20 seconds or less. 7.
Make your decisions the correct ones by believing in your
choices and acting with confidence. 8. In difficult situations,
flip a coin, choose heads or tails and then observe how you feel
about the outcome of the toss. Your response to the coin toss
will help you make the right decision.

The Biggest Shopping Day of The Year vs. AdBusters

On the Day After Thanksgiving Kohls, KMart, Caribou Coffee and other American retailers will open their doors at 5AM for the holiest of all shopping days in America.

Buy Nothing Day: November 25, 2005

There are more circulars and advertising inserts incenting purchases for this specific day than any other day of the year, according to Media Week. Countering these massive energies is the grassroots declaration of Buy Nothing Day, a resistance fortified by AdBusters.

What is this all about? AdBusters’ Brian Highley explains, “We ask people to go 24 hours without buying anything. Some find that they can’t and we encourage them to ask themselves, ‘Why not?’”

Buy Nothing Day will be celebrated in a record 65 countries this year. Fueled in part by a growing anti-American sentiment, more folks in more countries will be hanging posters and discussing global consumerism. AdBusters.org has downloadable posters and paraphernalia to spread the word of Buy Nothing Day.

In America, it is unlikely that Buy Nothing Day will reach your attention unless you read Adbusters. Wired and The Christian Science Monitor ran articles this week covering Buy Nothing Day, but the vast majority of the rest of the coverage will only come if participants make a big enough spectacle of themselves to become newsworthy.

Why so little coverage? The efforts of AdBusters are well-meaning but poorly orchestrated. There is no press release, a basic tool of a communication society.

AdBusters has few facts to readily give out on Buy Nothing Day, like the full name of “Ted Dave” who started Buy Nothing Day, the year of its inception: 1992, but that’s about it.

In years past, AdBusters was thwarted from buying spot TV time to run a thirty-second commercial questioning the consumption of American and Canadian citizens while promoting Buy Nothing Day. Thwarted? AdBusters called stations directly. If their goal was truly to run their ad they could have had their ad run with the help of a Spot TV Buying service. Instead, it appears that their goal was to get rejected so they could play the martyr card and generate sympathy.

Martyrdom is a questionable tactic, with limited repeatability. Questioning shopping on the biggest American shopping day will no doubt prove ineffectual in America. Asking consumers to restrain their shopping habit in the face of the most media advertising for the best sales of the year taking place over the longest shopping day of the year is like asking a smoker to quit and taking them to Vegas. Not a prescription for abstinence. To provide day-long distraction, residents of San Jose, CA have organized a bike ride and folks in Washington County, Wisconsin are organizing an all day film festival.

Reaching mass Americans is only likely if local participants make themselves newsworthy. In Fairbanks, AK Buy Nothing Day activists are planning a demonstration around WalMart. In Northern California, folks calling themselves the People’s Revolutionary Organization is staging a full day of direct action throughout their county in support of Buy Nothing Day, staging events at 7 different shopping centers in the area from 9am-5pm.

Granted, AdBusters has gotten better at promoting Buy Nothing Day. To begin with, they stopped selling calendars and Tshirts to promote themselves. However, their efforts continue to communicate “Look at this fabulous idea of AdBusters” instead of giving helpful tactics towards increased effectiveness.

Many activists question the efficacy of AdBusters. Why would they launch BlackSpot Sneakers when NoSweat was already making an eco-friendly shoe made by workers paid a decent wage? Why don’t they promote/review the best books? Why wouldn’t they put a link to the WalMart movie in their magazine? Does nobody else make a decent video or media literacy kit? Why is every piece of media they sell and promote branded AdBusters?

AdBusters, AdBusters, AdBusters. Me, me, me.

AdBusters recent removal of page numbers makes the magazine more of an art object than a tool for disseminating discussion fodder. If changing behavior is their goal, then they have an obligation to get better at disseminating what’s working that isn’t branded AdBusters. There is a huge opportunity for AdBusters to grow by better suiting the needs of its users and occasional users.

Employing the crass techniques of big business seems to go against the culture of AdBusters. There are no goals for Buy Nothing Day. There are no means of measuring success. It is time for AdBusters to get better, to get professionally organized, to use basic tools of planning and communication.

Get the Facts with DVD Camcorder Reviews

One of the latest technological toys on the market is DVD camcorders. DVD camcorders are unique devices that allow you to record video directly to a disk that you can put in your DVD player to watch, or put in your PC to edit. While this sounds really nifty, what you will discover when you read most DVD camcorder reviews that have been written by techies, is that the DVD camcorder is far from perfect.

Although the new DVD camcorder models are close to achieving the same level of picture quality as the MiniDV, they aren’t quite there yet. That being said, DVD camcorders shouldn’t be overlooked if owning one truly interests you. The reason is because there are some exceptional models on the market that may be worth your while if you wish to obtain this technology.

One of the better models out there is the Sony DCR-DVD403. In fact, according to some DVD camcorder reviews, this particular model is considered to be one of the most advanced DVD camcorders to date. It is celebrated for capturing wonderful stills and impressive video. That being said, when compared to the top-of-the-line MiniDV’s out there, it still can’t match their superior picture quality. Furthermore, this DVD camcorder uses an MPEG2 compression, which is considered to be worse than the compression methods used by the MiniDV.

In other words, the problem with many DVD camcorders, aside from their expensive price tag, is that their heavy compression causes images to lose quality. Basically, the image that comes through the lens and on to the sensor of the DVD camcorder is exceptional, but it loses its quality as soon as it is compressed down into DVD format. This is currently the problem that DVD camcorder manufacturers need to overcome.

Something else that needs to be taken into account when considering DVD camcorders is DVD disk technology. DVD disks are endowed with a technology known as “transparency”. This type of technology allows the user to record video you can instantly play, edit, and share with no strings attached. While the technology does exist it still hasn’t been totally perfected.

Another aspect that you need to consider about DVD camcorders is that most of the disks you use will need to be finalized in order for your DVD player to be able to read them. DVD camcorders come with the feature to finalize the disk so you shouldn’t have a problem with this procedure.

As far as DVD disks are concerned there are different ones that you can use. For instance, there are DVD+R, DVD-R, DVD+RW and DVD-RAM disks. DVD-R and DVD+R hold approximately 30 minutes of video, as does DVD+RW. However, the major difference between DVD+RW and DVD -R and +R is that a DVD+RW is a re-writable disk, which means that it can be recorded over and used more than once. These disks do not need to be finalized. A DVD-RAM disk, on the other hand, can hold more video than the others, and produces slightly better images. However, the images on the disk need to first be transferred to a PC, as most DVD players can not play the format of this disk.

Finally, if you are really interested in getting a DVD camcorder, you should check out plenty of DVD camcorder reviews about the camcorder you are interested in buying before you make any final decisions. Find out whether or not purchasing a DVD camcorder is worth your while, or if you should just stick to the MiniDV.

6 Alternatives to Prozac

Amino Acids

The building blocks of neurotransmitters; the amino acid 5-HTP is the most popular. Talking it can elevate the mood in cases of depression, anxiety, and panic attacks, and relieve insomnia. This supplement also increases the production of the neurotransmitter serotonin.

B Vitamins

Many people, particularly women over 65, have B-12 deficiencies and respond dramatically to injections of this vitamin - Vitamin B-12 lozenges are also available and quite inexpensive. All B vitamins can boost mood; they work by facilitating neurotransmitter function.

Other pluses of taking a good Vitamin B complex are that they are critical for the prevention of heart disease, cancer and Alzheimer’s.

DHEA

This hormone is marketed in Europe specifically for post-menopausal depression, though it may be helpful for other forms as well. DHEA has been used in conjunction with estrogen to treat hot flashes. It may also help to elevate mood and promote energy.

Essential Fatty Acids

Supplements containing essential fatty acids, such as Omega 3 fish oil or Flax Seed oil are among the best documented. The reason they are so effective? Essential fatty acids are part of every cell membrane, and if those membranes aren’t functioning, well, neither is your brain.

GABA

GABA, or Gamma-Amino butyric Acid, is an amino acid that is considered a major inhibitory neurotransmitter found in approximately 30% to 40% of all brain synapses. In clinical study, GABA supplementation has demonstrated a wide variety of health benefits that may help to provide positive support for: tiredness, fatigue and weakness.

GABA has been used for treatment of depression and can assist in elevating the mood. The amino acid, GAMA can also help treat occasional nervousness, anxiety and panic attacks.

SAM-e

An amino acid combination produced by humans, animals and plants. Supplements come from a synthetic version produced in a lab that has shown a lot of promise in European studies.

SAM-e affects the synthesis of neurotransmitters. Due to its sedative-like qualities, it is widely used as a natural pain reliever and muscle relaxant.

As with any vitamin or supplement, please consult your doctor before taking.

Create A Fantastic Sounding Piano Improvisation Using Just One Chord!

You’d be amazed to find out that some of the most complex sounding pieces of music are actually simple to create. Take the piano lesson “Caverns” for example. Here we use just one chord in the left hand to create a harmonic foundation for the right hand improvisation.

The right hand plays both melody and bass notes but the left is just playing one chord. The sound that is created is full and rich! But how can this be? After all, only one chord is used. The secret is in how the chord is played.

We use a simple ostinato pattern to create the backdrop. Now this backdrop is the key to the whole piece. It quietly goes on in the background while the right hand is busy playing melody. Bass notes are also called into play with the right hand crossing over the left. Back and forth the right hand goes and we end up with 2 minutes of music using just one chord!

This is an excellent example of the power of limits. We know what the chord will be - in this case D minor. We know that we will be playing melody notes from the D Dorian mode. Now we can relax and enjoy the act of making music. With the decisions of what to play out of the way, it makes the act of creating all that easier.

Starting Your Own Fruit Trees

*Note: This article first appeared in Grandiflora Magazine.

Starting Your Own Fruit Trees

Thomas Ogren
I flat out love growing fruit trees and have been crazy about them all my life. Or at least, as much of my life as I can remember. Actually, the very first thing I can clearly recall involved fruit trees.
I was about three, possibly four years old. It was a warm, lazy spring weekend and my older sisters were gone somewhere with my mom, but my dad was home, working in the garage. I wasn’t allowed to cross the street by myself, but down the block, across the street, was a beautiful pineapple guava tree growing in the middle of some grouchy old man’s lawn. The tree had a huge crop of large, green, totally delicious fruit, but the owner wouldn’t let any of us kids pick guavas from his tree, much less climb it. He claimed that we would break the branches. He would however let us have fruit that fell on the ground, but these guavas were generally too soft and mushy.
That day I walked down the street by all by myself, seeing no adults or even any other kids around. I looked at that tree and dashed across the street. The old man was nowhere around and I climbed up his guava tree and started stuffing big, fat guavas in all my pockets. I picked as many as my pockets could hold and climbing back down I did indeed break a few small branches.
Looking both ways (of course!) I ran back across the street with my loot. Back at home I found my dad still in the garage and I showed him my stash, expecting him to yell at me for crossing the street. But dad never did make the connection and thus my first episode of crime was all in all, a total success.
Some fifty years later I now have five guava trees growing in my own yard, all grown from seed. I also have many other fruit trees, all of them homegrown ones.

Fruit From Cuttings
Some fruit is so easy to propagate I always wonder why everyone doesn’t try it. Grapes, figs, mulberries, and pomegranates are all easy to grow from directly-stuck cuttings. I cut off a piece of dormant wood, 12-18 inches long, and I bury almost all of it in the ground where I want it to grow. I leave at least one good bud above ground. Sometimes to insure a better take, I’ll stick five or six such cuttings in the same spot. If they all grow, then the next winter I dig up the extra ones and give them to friends. I use cutting wood that grew last year and find that wood that is about pencil thickness or somewhat thicker roots the best.
I recently accidentally discovered a way to get plum wood to root for me. I used a long whip of plum branch (dormant wood) as a stake in a one gallon pot of some fancy gold heart ivy. To my surprise the plum wood rooted and started to grow the next spring. I now do this on purpose, using plum wood that is from last year’s vigorous growth. I select plum whips 2 to 3 foot long, with no branching on them, and stick each one all the way down into the center of a gallon pot of some well-rooted perennial flowers or herbs. A surprising number of these plums grow, and since they are “on their own root,” they don’t need to be budded or grafted. Try it.

From Seed
I have a spot in my backyard next to my compost heap, and here I toss any and all old pits from plums, apricots, peaches, and nectarines. I toss apple and pear seeds in here too. At the end of the summer I shake an inch or so of old compost over the area and see what grows. Since I do this every year, I always have a ready supply of seedlings each year.
In the winter months, or in the very early spring months if you live in a zone 4-7 area, dig up some of these year-old seedlings, bare root, and pot them up one to each one gallon pot. I use a 50-50 mix of potting soil and garden dirt.
I then water the pots, set the potted seedling on a table, clip off most of the top, leaving 4-6 inches of trunk above ground, and then cleft graft the seedling. Cleft grafting is, I think, the easiest method and it works well with apricot, peach, plum, nectarine, quince, apples and pears. I use a thin bladed knife and tap it (tapping the back of the knife blade with a small hammer or a piece of wood) directly into the center of the cut seedling, going down only about one inch. I cut scion wood (whatever you want to convert your seedling to) that is from last year’s growth. I like to use scion wood that has a diameter that is slightly smaller than the diameter of the seedling I’m going to graft it to. The grafts, or scions, should be about 3 to 4 inches long and each should have several good, dormant buds. The scions can be cut to shape with a sharp pocketknife. Try to get your scions cut smoothly, with a gradual taper.
The scions are then tapped into place in the split seedling (the rootstock), making sure that the cambiums of both scion and rootstock match on at least one side. The cambium is the thin green layer of wood that is just inside the outer bark. To keep your work from drying out, cover the entire finished graft with a thick coating of grafting tar or grafting wax. I also put a dab of the tar or wax directly on the exposed cut tip of the scion. Be careful as you do this, not to knock the scion out of contact with the rootstock cambium.
Now, unless a kid, bird, or a cat bangs into this graft and knocks the scion askew, if you did it right, come springtime the scion will sprout and grow. Voila! You’ve got a grafted fruit tree.
You can graft peach onto almond, apricot, plum, peach or nectarine rootstock, and visa versa. For sandy soils peach or nectarine make the best rootstocks, but for heavy clay soils, plum is by far the best. Apples can be grafted on apple seedlings, as can pears. Pear can also be grafted on apple stock. If so inclined, scion wood from quince can also be grafted onto apple or pear. An apple or pear grafted onto a quince rootstock will be a dwarfed tree. If your soil is clay, a pear rootstock grows best. If sandy or loamy, apple is preferred.
I grow these new fruit trees on in the gallon pots for a year, making sure to cut off any sucker wood that arises from below the graft. Keep them well fertilized and watered and they will often grow 3-5 feet in one summer’s time. The next year either plant them or give them away to friends.
If you have a potted fruit tree seedling where the graft fails to take, simply cut off the unsuccessful grafted part. You can re-graft it the next dormant season. If you have year old seedlings left in the ground that you won’t get around to digging and grafting, consider chopping them off just above the ground in the late fall. The next spring these seedlings will grow up with multiple trunks. The next winter dig your second-year seedlings with multiple trunks, thin them back to the strongest 2 or 3 stems, and then cleft graft each of the stems to something different. I have made many three-in-one trees this way, part plum, part apricot, and part nectarine. These make extra nice presents. You can of course just as easily graft each branch to a different cultivar of the same species, such as three different kinds of plum on the same rootstock. A tree like this is often very fruitful, since it will cross-pollinate itself.

Budding
Just a little here on budding. In zones 3-8 most budding is done in May,. June or early July. The easiest method is shield budding. A T cut is made on the rootstock stem, cutting through the outer bark and the cambium, down to the hardwood.. Next you cut a thin, shield-shaped slice of wood (from scion wood of the cultivar you wish to bud), containing one dormant bud. This shield will be about 3/4th of an inch long. This bud is then inserted in the T cut under the bark of the seedling rootstock. I use thin, clear plastic tie tape to wrap the bud up tightly. I will sometimes cut a tiny slice in the middle of the tape and wrap the tape over the tip of the bud itself, which should just peak out of the sliced portion of the tape. The tape serves to keep the bud in close contact with the rootstock and also to keep the bud graft from drying out.
Keep an eye on the budded stem for several weeks and by then if the bud and the shield are still plump and green, consider it a take. Cut off the rest of the stem half an inch above the new bud graft, and this will force the new bud.
Budding is not quite as easy to do as grafting, at least not at first. It has several advantages though. You can bud when the weather is nice and if the bud doesn’t take, you can try it all over again in a different spot. Budding is easiest on thicker rootstocks.
I find that for me I have the best luck budding roses, apples, pears and apricots. Plums can be a little trickier. Cherries, by the way, are considerably more difficult to graft and bud than are the other stone fruits.
If you are lucky enough to know an old gardener who knows how to graft, ask him or her to show you how to cut your scions. A little practice always helps as does a sharp knife. There are many books with drawings of cleft grafts and these too can be used as guides. It may sound a tad snobby, but once you can graft your own fruit trees, you join a rather select group. Almost all gardeners know what grafting is, but not that many actually know how to do it right.
One last thought: cleft grafting is also easy to do on existing dormant fruit trees. There is no reason you can’t graft some different varieties on each of your trees. I have an apple tree with about a dozen kinds of apples on it and a pear tree that has five kinds of pear, plus quince and apple growing on it. I also have almonds growing on one branch of a plum tree, four kinds of plums on another tree, and both plum and nectarine on the apricot tree in my front yard. I have five kinds of roses budded on the climbing rose that grows on my front porch. I guess my plants are all mixed up, but then, what can you expect from an old guava thief?

Understand Bear Markets

A bear market is when the stock market falls for an extended period of time. The fall is usually around 20% and is the opposite of a bull market. A bear market is caused by the decline in stock prices which are directly influenced by a decrease in company profits. Falling stock prices can also be a correction of over valued stock.

When stocks become to expensive they will eventually fall to a more reasonable price. The decline stock market is further perpetuated by scared investors who will sell their stocks at the first sign of decrease stock prices and the cycle continues. For example the bear market during thw 1970s went on for over a decade when stocks went sideways. It was experiences like that which cause people to move away from day and active trading into more low risk investments. This is when the popularity of bonds and mutual funds began.

A bear market will cause your stocks to drop in price. The decrease in their value can happen extremely quickly or gradually over time. Both lead to the same conclusion that your quote value of a stock is actually lower. However, a bear market is only bad if you plan on selling your stock immediately or you simply need the money. Investments are really meant to be long term. If stocks prices drop all you need to do is wait for them to increase again. In fact bear markets, falling stock prices, and depressive markets are important to the success of the long term investor. Bear markets offer an opportunity to buy cheap stocks.

If you have the ability, financial basis, and the patience to wait a decade or more for your profit, bear markets are extremely important to you. Financial advisors will often tell their clients to sell their stocks when market prices fall but this is clearly a bad move. Financial advisor usually offer this kind of advice to appease an investor concerns and uphold their own reputation. In other word financial experts do not know everything, use your own judgment.

Investing money in a bear market is not rocket science but it can be tricky. You need to look for companies and funds that have the future potential to make you money 20 years from now. This is hard to do, since future predictability is impossible. However, you can use common sense. Gillette razors and coke product stock may fail 40% today in the future people are still going to buy both. The important point here is to not to couple stock price with business. Just because a stock price falls does not mean that a company is going under. As mentioned above it may just be a stock market correction.

If you can take a deep breath and have confidence you will realize that a bear market and falling stock prices is a good thing. It is like clearance sale on stocks, and suddenly companies which were out of your reach can be afforded. Everything in the universe including the stock market will find and maintain balance - thus bringing those falling stocks back up to reasonable price.
